The Frontier Plus Portable Stove is the new and improved big brother of the wildly popular Frontier Tent Stove. The Frontier Plus comes with adjustable legs, ventilation control, a wider flue pipe, and a glass window so you can monitor your fire from a distance and enjoy the ambiance of a campfire safely inside your canvas tent.

The Frontier Plus Portable Stove is the long awaited, new and improved version of the Frontier Portable Stove.  The design upgrades of the Frontier Plus include a tempered glass door, adjustable air wash, wider flue pipe system, longer legs, and a larger cooking surface. Like the original, The Frontier Plus is lightweight and designed to pack down for easy transport and storage. Recommended as a light weight and affordable entry level wood burning stove for camping and glamping in any canvas tent.

Key Features of the Frontier Plus Stove

Tempered Glass Window: Monitoring your fire is easy through the tempered glass window on the firebox door of the Frontier Plus Stove.  The airwash system mounted next to the window can be adjusted to keep your view of the flames clear.

Airwash System:  A new feature on the Frontier Plus, a small circular hole on the front door is equipped with a cover plate that can be opened to increase the airflow to your fire, making it burn hotter and faster.  When closed the coals can be oxygen deprived for a lower and slower burn.

Telescoping Collapsible Legs: Telescoping tripod legs provide a sturdy base for the Frontier Plus Stove and fold towards the firebox for easy set up and transport.  Spring loaded button locks prevent the telescoping legs from collapsing for safety and stability.

Catch Tray:  The Frontier Plus is equipped with a catch tray to help keeps coals and ash in the stove and off the floor.  The catch tray is removeable for easy cleaning.

Flue Damper:  The flue pipe section closest to the firebox has an integrated damper to adjust the air flow exiting the stove.  Close the damper for a slower burn, open it to turn up the heat for a faster burn or to get your fire started.

Extra Large Spark Arrestor: CanvasCamp includes a spark arrestor with every Frontier Stove Plus stove.  The spark arrestor is the top most section of flue with a covered top and small holes running around it to allow smoke to escape while preventing larger prices of burning ash and coals from flying out of the flue pipe and damaging your tent or sparking a fire.   The spark arrestor needs to be cleaned regularly to prevent residue from building up and restricting airflow.  Certain types of wood create more creosote than others, so this is a safety feature that needs to be inspected frequently.  The Spark arrestor has three attachment points for guy lines that add stability to your stove set up.  The Spark arrestor on the Frontier Plus is three times the size of the spark arrestor on the original Frontier Stove for improved airflow

Wide Flue Pipe Sections:  The Frontier Stove includes five 35cm (1’2) flue pipe sections 100mm (4”) in diameter.  Twice the diameter of the original Frontier Stove for improved drafting and airflow. Additional flue pipe sections can be purchased separately if your set up requires more clearance.

Tipi Sleeve (optional): A Tipi sleeve specifically made for exiting the Frontier Plus Stove flue pipe out of the stop of a CanvasCamp tipi is sold separately.

Stove Jack: CanvasCamp includes a modular Exit I 45° stove jack with the purchase of every Frontier Stove allowing you to customize your stove placement in any canvas tent or tipi.  The 45° angle on the flashing is matched for the slope of the canopy on Sibley Bell Tents.  Check out the Exit I Stove Jack (sold separately) for traditional system

Top Exit System: The Frontier Plus Stove is designed to be vertically vented by running the flue pipe out of the top of a tent.  A stove jack or flashing is required.

    Cooking on a Tent Stove

The flat top of the Frontier Plus is your cooking surface.  A wood burning stove can be used to cook just about anything a you can cook on the range in your kitchen.  Unlike your gas or electric range at home, there is no knob to quickly adjust the heat output. It takes a little practice to get the temperature right, but once you have your system figured out your camping meals will never be the same.

After you get a nice fire burning evenly and have some glowing hot coals to work with you can start cooking.  Place your pot or pan on the hottest spot on the cooking surface for high heat and fast cooking.  The hot spot is usually in the center or directly above the largest mass of burning wood. For simmering or slow cooking, move your pot or pan to the sides or front of the stove, or spread out your coals so there is only a thin layer of fuel under your meal.

The Frontier Plus is equipped with a removeable plate on the cooking surface which sits flush when installed or can be taken off maximum heat exposure and cooking directly over an open flame.

    Frontier Portability

Best quality of the original Frontier Tent Stove is its portability.  The Frontier Plus carries on that tradition. The three telescoping legs can be collapsed and folded down against the firebox and a carry handle on the side means you can carry it around like a suitcase.  The flue sections can be disassembled and stored inside of the firebox.  Once packed, you only need to make one trip to the from camp to the car to carry it, and it’s light enough to be strapped to a horse or even a child when packing it into the backcountry.  Stoves get messy with soot and ash so the Frontier Plus is designed to fit in a custom carry bag (sold separately) to keep you and your stuff clean in between adventures.

    Wood Burning

The heat output of any fire comes down to two essential components: fuel and air.  The Frontier Stove is designed to be used with wood only, and preferably good wood that is completely dry.  The temperature and speed that firewood burns at varies by the type of tree it came from and how dry or ‘aged’ the wood is.  Generally speaking hardwood burns longer, and slower, soft pine and conifers burn hot and fast.  Wood that is new, live, or wet does not burn very well and will generate a lot of smoke.  If you’ve got bad wood you’ll need a bigger fire with a lot of oxygen to achieve a more complete combustion.

Remember that there are types of trees that are poisonous; if your unsure what kind of wood your burning, don’t burn it.  Use wood that is native to the environment you are camping in and is sourced locally.  Bringing in wood from distant places can introduce non-native and invasive species that can harm the local flora and fauna.  Never bring shipping pallets or crates into the forest.

    Safety

Canvas bell tents are not for use with open fire pits. Fire safety is the responsibility of the user.  We encourage you to educate yourself and practice vigilant fire safety.  Read our FAQ and blogs to learn more about fire safety.  Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns at any time.  Always check local fire restrictions prior to starting a fire as rules and regulations may change frequently throughout the year.  CanvasCamp cannot be held liable for any damage or injury to persons or property resulting from the use or misuse of fire or flammable materials in or around our tents. When using one of our Exits, we advise to leave a minimum distance of 1m (3ft) between the stove and the Exit.

Always use a carbon monoxide doctor when using a wood burning stove inside your tent.
