Polyester/Nylon Tents
Tents made of polyester and nylon are generally cheaper, lighter, and more compact when stored. However, in addition to these advantages, there are some important disadvantages to consider. For example, they are not breathable, their lifespan is much shorter compared to cotton tents, and you cannot re-impregnate them.
The average lifespan of a polyester/nylon tent is between 10 (e.g., Decathlon Fresh/Black) and 20 weeks of use (under the best conditions).
Suitable for: If you're planning a weekend getaway in the summer or intend to camp for a few days, a tent made from synthetic material might be a good option—perfect for a short trip. However, it's best not to leave synthetic tents sitting in the blazing sun.
Cotton/Poly-Cotton Tents
At CanvasCamp, we deliberately choose tents made of cotton or poly-cotton, always striving for the best balance between comfort and longevity. Climate naturally plays an important role, and moreover, these tents can be re-impregnated when necessary to double or even multiply the number of usage weeks.
Concretely, the average lifespan before maintenance is needed is as follows:
- Sibley Traveller: between 20 and 40 usage weeks
- ProTech: between 30 and 50 usage weeks
- Apex: between 50 and 150 usage weeks
So, if you only camp a few weeks per year and take good care of your tent, it can serve you for a lifetime.
Important Notes
Note I - Weight ≠ Quality
It is important to mention that the weight of a tent fabric tells you very little about its true quality. The most critical aspect of a tent is actually invisible: the applied coating. A fabric with a high-quality coating—produced in Europe or the USA and designed for intensive and permanent use—costs many times more per m² to manufacture. Additionally, the type of yarn and the weaving technique are incredibly important, although they are hardly visible to the naked eye.
Note II - The Importance of Proper Care
It is essential to take good care of your equipment. A fitting comparison is with leather shoes: a quality pair can be completely worn out within a year under intensive and careless use, whereas if they are maintained and cared for properly, they can last for many years. The same principle applies to tents. In addition to the technical properties of the fabric—such as the coating, the weave, and the yarn—factors such as positioning, exposure to weather conditions, and regular inspection and maintenance play a crucial role. In short, durability is not only a matter of material choice but also of responsible use.

Ideal for compact family tents or easily transportable models. Suitable for camping vacations from spring to autumn, with a focus on ease of use and mobility.
Midweight Tent Fabrics (220–320 g/m²)
Often used for robust, four-season family tents. They offer an excellent balance between comfort, durability, and weather resistance for regular campers.
Heavy Tent Fabrics (320–540 g/m²)
Suitable for professional use or longterm/permanent installations. Perfect for glamping, rentals, outdoor events, or for users who keep their tent set up year-round.
