Installation & Safety
Can I install a tent stove in my CanvasCamp tent?
Yes, all our sufficiently large glamping and scout tents can be equipped with a stove. Some models come with a fireproof stove jack, while others do not, allowing more flexibility in placement. A wood stove inside a canvas tent can create unforgettable experiences on a cold night, but using one requires knowledge and precautions.
With our Exits, any stove can be installed in any tent. Detailed installation instructions can be found on our YouTube channel. Watch: How to install a Tent stove Jack?
If you are not using the stove, you can seal the stove jack with the included aluminum rain cap or quickly cover it with an upside-down hard plastic cup of the appropriate diameter.
For a sewn-in stove jack, check out our Stove Flap—a heat-resistant, cut-out fabric piece that you can sew onto your desired spot on the canvas.
Safety Tips for using a tent stove:
- Learn how wood stoves work to minimize risks of damage and injury.
- Use a double-walled stove pipe where it passes through the tent fabric or exit.
- Install a spark arrestor at the end of the stove pipe.
- Place the stove at least 1 meter away from tent walls and roof.
- Use a heat-resistant mat under the stove.
- Position the stove pipe downwind when possible.
- Burn only dry, untreated firewood—never wet or contaminated wood as this leads to all kinds of problems.
- While not required, applying a fire retardant around the stove area can add an extra layer of safety.
No canvas is 100% fireproof, and no safety standard guarantees complete protection. Use common sense and keep fire away from the canvas. That said, all CanvasCamp cotton tents are compatible with our Exits, allowing you to choose the stove placement.
Note: CanvasCamp is not responsible for any damage or injuries caused by using stoves or fires in our tents.

Installing a wood burning stove without making a hole in the tent fabric?
If your stove has a horizontal exit, such as our Bison Stove, you can simply unzip a side window, remove the mesh, and run the stove pipe out. Use the double sided wall pipe where it goes through the window to reduce heat towards the canvas.
If you still have questions or want to speak with a specialist, don't hesitate to call us.
Can petrol or diesel stoves be used inside CanvasCamp tents?
Yes, you can technically use petrol or diesel stoves, but we do not recommend them inside CanvasCamp tents.
These fuels burn hotter, produce stronger fumes, and increase the risk of flare‑ups.
For safety and comfort, we strongly recommend wood‑burning tent stoves. They burn cleaner, are easier to control, and are designed to work safely with a proper stove jack and chimney setup.
General Stove Information
Can I use a wood burning stove in a non-cotton tent?
We strongly advise against using tent stoves in 100% polyester or nylon tents, as these materials are highly flammable. We believe only cotton and polycotton tents are suitable for use with a tent stove.
Which log size is suitable for each stove size?
Log size depends on the size of your tent stove.
As a simple guide:
- Small stoves: logs around 20–25 cm
- Medium stoves: logs around 25–30 cm
- Large stoves: logs around 30–35 cm
Shorter logs burn more efficiently and are easier to load.
Which stove size is compatible with which tent?
Stove size depends mainly on the tent’s height and floor space. Choose a stove that allows safe clearance around the pipe and enough room to move comfortably inside.
- Sibley 400 – 450
These sizes work well with a medium wood stove. The height and space allow safe pipe routing and efficient heating. - Sibley 500 and larger
These tents can handle medium to large stoves, offering plenty of room for heat output and safe installation. - Sibley 300 or compact tents
We do not recommend using a stove in the Sibley 300 or compact tents. The tent is not high and wide enough to maintain safe clearances. - Other CanvasCamp models
Most are compatible with medium to large stoves, depending on height, space and the position of the stove jack.
Stove Jack Setup
Can I use a Fly or Double Roof in combination with a tent stove?
You can use a wood stove even if your Sibley Bell tent is combined with a Fly / Double Roof:
- Nylon Fly: We strongly discourage using tent stoves with a nylon fly, as nylon ignites and burns uncontrollably. However, if you still choose to do so, take these precautions:
- Exit the stove pipe through the side wall.
- Use a double-walled heat shield stove pipe.
- Burn only completely dry firewood.
- But better yet—don't do it!
- UV Fly: Suitable for use with a stove in cold desert nights however take the same precautions as the Nylon Fly.
- All Purpose Fly: Compatible with an Exit / stove pipe installation.
Once again—only burn dry firewood, and we are not responsible for any risks!
Note: CanvasCamp tents are not designed for use with open flames or propane heaters. Educate yourself on the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by stoves and burners. CanvasCamp is not responsible for any damage or injuries resulting from stove or fire use in our tents.
