Borax is a salt that can be used to prevent mold growing in the canvas fabric of your tent. When dissolved in hot water it can be sprayed on the inside and outside of your tent. The alkaline pH level caused by borax will kill mold and prevent new mold from growing.

Borax is a safe, powerful and highly effective anti-fungal that’s cheap and widely available. It comes in powder form which you dissolve in warm water (5%), then apply it directly to the canvas with a brush or a fumigation backpack, better in the inside of the tent as it will be more effective. If applied 2-4 times a year, especially in spring and autumn when the fungus attacks the most, it will keep your tent completely mold free. However, if your tent is permanently set-up near the sea, then aim for 4-6 times a year as a preventative measure. It’s very important to apply the Borax before, or at the very first sign of mold. Mold will initially appear as pale grey spots that may be easy to overlook. However, if left to its own devices, the mold will spread rapidly as it colonises your tent. If applied at this point, Borax will eradicate the mold but the mold spots will remain permanently. At this late stage, the best you can hope for is to make those blemishes a touch lighter; prevention is better than cure.

    Instructions

    1. Set up your tent.
    2. Mix 500gr Borax with 15 litres of hot water. The powder must mix and dissolve well.
    3. Fill your fumigation backpack/spray bottle with the above solution and spray the entire tent. This should only take 10 minutes and will be time well spent. It's better to do it inside as that is where mold grows but you can do both. Inside and outside.
